We don’t know exactly when Merlin became a member of Kingsman, but we do know that he’s been operating as Merlin since before 1997, when he oversaw a training cohort for the position of Lancelot.
As Merlin, his regular duties involve training Kingsman candidates from beginning to end, handling agents on missions, overseeing the tech of Kingsman, handling mission research and compiling information to give agents prior to missions, assigning missions to agents, etc. He is effectively the quartermaster over of the home (UK) branch of Kingsman, and there’s not much that goes on in Kingsman that he doesn’t know about or have some hand in.
Merlin is extremely knowledgable and skilled with computers and tech, as befitting the ‘tech wizard’ of Kingsman. While he doesn’t personally handle every little thing, he is hand on as much as he can be, and when he does personally handle something, it’s done to perfection. There’s not much he can’t hack (biometric securities aside), and there’s little information he can’t track down if he sets himself to.
While he often portrays a calm and placid front, he has a streak of mischief miles wide. He enjoys taking the mick out of people, as well as teasing them and pushing them to their limits. This is something you can see clearly, for example, during the parachute test; his tone of voice and the grin he sports as he drops the ‘bomb’ that someone might not have a parachute says it all.
Merlin is rather possessive of what he considers to be his. This is another thing you can see clearly in a couple places through the movie; the look on his face during exchange where Eggsy and then Harry take his clipboard right out of his hands is beautiful, and he flat out tells Eggsy on the plane that a particular gun is his, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. That’s not to say he’s not willing to share when the need arises- after all, he does let both Eggsy and Harry use his clipboard without yanking it back until they’re done- he simply doesn’t like doing so if he doesn’t have to.
He is not one to put up with any kind of attitude, especially if it’s unwarranted. Friendly teasing and banter is one thing, but if someone shows him disrespect? Merlin will do whatever he has to in order to take the person down a peg and put a pin in the balloon of their attitude.
Protecting others, especially those he cares about, is tantamount to Merlin. It’s a prime reason, I imagine, why he joined Kingsman, and why he’s Merlin; being Merlin is the best way he has to use his skills to save the lives of innocents, as well as to safeguard his agents.

INCENTIVE: While the mission to stop V-Day ended in success, with Valentine and V-Day shut down permanently, it wasn’t without casualties. These casualties came in two forms; the wide, sweeping, anonymous casualties of anyone injured or killed during the brief time Valentine’s chips were active; and one very specific casualty in the form of Harry Hart, a long time friend and fellow Kingsman. What would be most important to Merlin would be to forestall any of these casualties. To do so, he would ask that he could have known, before sending Harry to Kentucky, what Valentine’s plan there was, so that he could have directed Harry in ending it- and Valentine- before the church massacre ever happened, thus also halting V-Day without a single chip activating.

FIT: While Merlin’s sexuality isn’t touched on in the movie, there are a few things I think can be imagined. At his age, Merlin has had plenty of time to explore intimacy and sexuality, both in himself and with others. He’s open minded when it comes to sex, having researched sex and sexuality thoroughly once he was old enough and having put that knowledge into practice over the years since he came of age, and he’s comfortable with his own varied sexual interests. He’s very much aware of how important consent is in sex, and he’s diligent about maintaining constant consent with his partners, especially if there’s more going on than simple sex. Really, the bottom line for Merlin is; if participating in physical intimacy with others on a regular basis will do what he’s asked, he has no problems with that, and will do what he can to enjoy himself and ensure his partners enjoy themselves.
